Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)
Inspiration: While birding from my backyard, I saw a bright Red-tailed Hawk circling low overhead, being illuminated by the reflection of the snow on the ground. Time taken to make this piece: 10 hours; Medium: Windsor & Newton Cotman Range Watercolors on 125lb bamboo paper (9.4” ×12.6”).
Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus)
Inspiration: A Great Horned Owl showed up for my birthday and perched on a low branch of a pine tree in my backyard for many minutes, before heading off for the night. Time taken to make this piece: 26 hours; Medium: Faber-Castell Polychromos color pencils on 24lb letter paper (8.5” ×11”).

Yellow-billed Magpie (Pica nuttalli)
Inspiration: On a trip to California, I came across a group of magpies foraging along the edge of a field, and I photographed one showing the iridescent hues, which I have tried to incorporate in my digital illustration. I also tried to bring out the playful character in the glow of the eye. Time taken to make this piece: 7 hours; Medium: Digital Art –Technical Pen and Lightpen on Procreate using Apple Pencil on iPad.

American Bitterns in the marsh (Botaurus lentiginosus)
Inspiration: When I was in California, I would see bitterns commonly in the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area, a large marsh close to where I was. In Massachusetts, while there are occasional sightings of American Bitterns, I am yet to see one. Bitterns camouflage beautifully while amidst the reeds! Time taken to make this piece: 6 hours; Medium: Graphite Pencil on 98lb Mixed Media paper (7” ×10”).
